Cabaret
Book by Joe Masteroff, Lyrics by Fred Ebb, Music by John Kander
Cabaret was, and still remains, one of the most daringly modern of Broadway musicals with its overall style and the seediness of the Berlin nightclub in which it is set. The extraordinary and morally ambiguous inhabitants and splendidly decadent activity within the Kit Kat Klub appear typical of Berlin nightlife in the early 1930s, but they also serve as a metaphor for the chaotic world outside. This provocative and winning musical tells a deceptively simple story of two love affairs. At its heart is the legendary Sally Bowles who performs nightly at the infamous night-club. And, through the songs and wry commentary of the cabaret’s emcee, the audience witnesses—within the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret—the political changes taking place outside in the real world. Songs from the show’s score include “Willkommen,” “Two Ladies,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” and “Cabaret.”

All My Sons
By Arthur Miller
Electrifying in its intensity, Arthur Miller’s All My Sons focuses on the fortunes of the Keller and Deever families. During the war, Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money. The dark shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that the young Keller son was reported missing during the war dominate the action. The love affair of Chris Keller and Anne Deever, the bitterness of George Deever returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father’s partner free, are all set in a structure of almost unbearable power. The climax showing the reaction of a son to his guilty father is a fitting conclusion to a dramatic story that will linger in the mind long after the play has ended.
