THE PEOPLE SIDE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY:

A project designed to share cultural, economic, ethical, and social information

about biotechnology.

Biotechnology has recently sparked a great deal of national and international debate.   Discussions about Genetically Modified Organisms [popularly known as GMOs] that are couched in principally biological terms ignore important human dimensions.  These include economic concerns about the ease or difficulty of marketing GMOs, ethical questions about the moral acceptability of the genetic manipulation of plants and animals, and social attitudes and values about the adoption or rejection of the  use of the GMOs.

To investigate the economic, ethical, and social dimensions of  biotechnology, nine Mid-West land grant universities and colleges (including four tribal colleges) embarked on a long term project entitled The Consortium to Address the Social, Economic, and Ethical Issues of Biotechnology, sponsored by the Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems of the Department of Agriculture.  The Mid-West states involved are Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The People Side of Biotechnology project is designed to disseminate material from that project to a broad public.  It includes reports on the cultural, economic, ethical, and social perspectives about biotechnology
