1. Connect with Course Goals and 
    Outcomes:  Activities and strategies that help students understand what finally should be learned from this lesson and how it fits into the larger context of the unit, course or school outcomes

2.  Activate Topic and Text Knowledge.  Activities and strategies that help students create a mental context for comprehending the text knowledge and, if necessary, about the type of text they are to read. (May be combined with Step 1).
 
3.  Focus on a Purpose for Reading.
Activities and strategies that give direct attention to the purpose for reading in order to support student's comprehension of the text.

4.  Students Complete Homework or Seat work.  Student use keyed organizing and relating strategies from Step 3 to construct a representation of text ideas.  May be individual or with others.
 
5. Check for Understanding:  activities  and strategies that check the structure of ideas  students have brought to class.  Allows for refinement and changes as necessary for valid and shared understanding of the text.
