Student Exchange Learning Opportunity

South Dakota State University
and University of Jönköping

The School of Health Sciences at the University of Jönköping, and South Dakota State University, College of Nursing announce the academic opportunity to study abroad.  The purpose of the endeavor is to promote and environment conducive to the international sharing of ideas, discussions, learning practices and joint programs to facilitate a spirit of unity, a sense of unity, a sense of cooperation responsibility and tangible experiences that will have an effect upon the nurse and client.


Objectives for Students
  1. Identify the basic components of any health care system.
  2. Contrast the key elements of the health care delivery systems in the United States and the Sweden.

Evaluation Measures

  1. Presentation at Host Institution: articulation of evaluation of objectives.
  2. Presentation to Home Institution: articulation of evaluation of objectives.
  3. Evidence of incorporation into student nursing practice.
  4. Evidence of incorporation into nursing curriculum.

The goals were outlined in the action plan in the Declaration of Intent and were: 

  1. Create greater understanding of social and cultural differences.

  2. Develop increased knowledge of professional practices.

  3. Facilitate understanding and acceptance of international diversity.

  4. Work jointly towards the preparation, development and publication of academic papers.

  5. Make possible the exchange of ideas for both students and academic staff.

  6. Assist in the transatlantic mobility of both students and academic staff.

  7. Ensure that all activities are monitored and evaluated towards a philosophy of total quality management

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDY

This is an opportunity for two undergraduate nursing students to study in Sweden.  The primary course taught in English and taken for credit is the International Perspectives in Childbearing course (plus others TBA).  The student will register and pay tution at SDSU for these courses.  Elective credit will be accepted on the student's transcript for the class.  There are also other opportunities for a full semester study in Sweden.  See contact faculty below for more information.

The exchange is from May 8- June 9, 2006.  The total cost is estimated at 3500+ per person (this includes tuition and fees, airline, lodging, bus transportation, and meals while in residence).  The College of Nursing will contribute $1000 per participant.

Student Obligations:

  • Student cost will be at least $2500.
  • Students must be enrolled at SDSU and attend/complete one or more courses during the exchange.
  • Students will share their scholarly endeavors at a SDSU Nursing Colloquium the next semester
  • Student will be required to obtain a passport and an international student identity card.
  • Student immunization must be up to date as of May 5, 2006.

Application Process and Responsibilities:

  • Students must be enrolled at SDSU College of Nursing as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th semester nursing major student in good academic standing as of spring 2006.
  • Interested students must submit three copies of a 1-2 page competitive essay describing ho this opportunity would be beneficial to their nursing career.  The essay should be describe what objective the student hopes to achieve, as well as, how this opportunity would be used to promote better understanding of culture diversity and increase professional collegiality.
  • Student must provide a letter of commitment indication that if they are selected they will fulfill all requirements and responsibilities. 

Deadline is December 19, 2005

Essays and letter of commitment should be submitted to Roberta K. Olsen, Dean of the College of Nursing.  Please drop off your essay and letter in SNF 255 or email them to Roberta.Olsen@sdstate.edu.
