Abstract Knowledge Level of Adolescents About HIV and AIDS in a Frontier Community Genie M. Ellis 1997 The average incubation period of HIV is approximately eight years. Many AIDS patients between the ages of 20-29 years were likely infected as adolescents. A total of 480 questionnaires were distributed among middle school students in a frontier community. Results concluded that knowledge level increased with grade progression and females were more knowledgeable than males. The majority of HIV questions were answered correctly implying that a high level of knowledge existed among most adolescents. Questions asked regarding HIV transmission (specifically mosquito bites and blood donation) showed a knowledge deficit among some adolescents. Primary sources of HIV information were school, television and parents. In collaboration with school systems, advanced practice nurses may be able to assist with HIV prevention education for the future.
