Abstract

Breakdown Risk in Persons with Tuberculosis In a Northern Plains Indian Tribe

Deann Eastman-Jansen

1997

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious disease on Indian Reservations in the United States.  Tuberculosis is classified as Class I, II, III, IV, and V.  Class I TB status means the individual has no disease.  Class II means an individual is infected with tuberculosis but does not have the active disease and is not infectious.  Class III status means the individual currently has active tuberculosis.  Class IV means the individual has no current disease but does have a history of previous episode(s) of the disease.  Class V status means TB is suspect and the diagnosis is pending.

The purpose of this study was to examine the records of all Class II, III, IV, and V TB patients on an Indian Reservation in the upper Midwest.  A chart review was performed in order to determine the prevalence of untreated or incompletely treated high risk patients in the following categories: end-stage renal disease, chronic renal failure, diabetes, and alcohol abuse.
