Abstract

Perception of Control Over Daily Activities and

Hopelessness in Elderly Rural Nursing Home Residents

Melanie Dunlap

1994

This study investigated the relationship between perception of control over daily activities and levels of hopelessness among elderly rural nursing home residents and the potential impact of differing staffing patterns in two facilities on perception of control and hopelessness.  A descriptive correlational design was used to identify the relationship between perception of control and hopelessness in the total sample (n=41, n=30).

Findings included a significant inverse relationship (p≤.01) between perception of control over daily activities and hopelessness and a significant difference (p≤.01) between the two facilities in perception of control.  The importance of these findings to nursing and the need for further research is discussed.  Additional findings related to case mix scores are addressed also.
