Abstract (Chapter One)

Perceptions of Mentoring Relationships of Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students And Hospital Staff Nurses

Gloria Damgaard

1988

Introduction to the Problem

Nurses, as all persons moving into new roles, need guidance and support in taking on these new or changing roles.  Neophytes in the nursing profession are in particular need of programs of orientation and perceptorship to ease their passage into the professional role.  Newly graduated nurses cry out for help and tell of their disillusionment with nursing. 1

Both nursing service and nursing education are concerned about the disillusionment and frustration of new graduates when they enter the work world.  The literature reports that one way to prevent and ease the impact of reality shock is to expose nursing students to the “real world of nursing” while they are students.  Preceptorships are one way to accomplish this goal. 2

The evolution of nursing into a professional status has increased time constraints in nursing education which has forced concentration on conceptual learning processes and the development of broad based, problem solving skills at the expense of development of technical, clinical skills.
