Abstract

Bodybuilders’ Knowledge and Perceptions Of the use of Anabolic Steroids

James P. Combs

1988

Anabolic steroids were introduced into the United States in 1954.  Today, there is mounting concern regarding the negative effects of their use.

Twenty-three (23) bodybuilders at a rural Midwestern University were subjects of a research study regarding their knowledge and perceptions of positive and negative effects of the use of anabolic steroids.  In response to a questionnaire, eighty-seven (87) percent of the subjects were aware of someone who used anabolic steroids.  They noted the most common source for obtaining anabolic steroids were friends and physician prescriptions.  The perceived beneficial effects noted by the subjects were increased body mass and increased body strength.  The perceived negative effects were liver disease and hypertension.  The findings of this study indicated the subject’s knowledge of the use of anabolic steroids was acute.  Their perceptions of the positive and negative effects were supported by the literature review.
