Abstract Family Environments that Promote the Immunization of At-Risk Children By Carol Clark 1997 The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine what factors in a family environment facilitate the immunization of at-risk children. Data was collected through in depth semi-structured interviews with parents. Rozella Scholtfeldt’s Health Seeking Conceptual Model was selected as a framework for this study. Scholtfeldt views humans as naturally seeking optimal health. Immunizations are a health promotion activity that parents can provide for their children to protect them from devastating childhood diseases. The data was coded on three levels to determine the factors that motivate parents to immunize their at-risk children. Seven factors were identified, including: health care system facilitators, responsibility, health promotion/illness prevention, outside influences, a positive relationship with the health care provider, mother’s organizational skills, and maternal maturity. This study will add to the body of nursing research that explores ways to meet the People 2000 goal of 90% immunization of two year olds by the year 2000. This study also recognizes that parents must be part of the solution to the problem of under immunization.
