Abstract The Role of Preceptor as an Educational Model in Nursing at the Baccalaureate Level Rosemary Chappell 1983 To step beyond the classroom into the workplace to become familiar with the reality of the work world is important for the baccalaureate nursing student in preparation for the professional nursing role. What better way to do it than to be supported by a person who is familiar with the realities and willing to help the student become more confident in the nursing role? The title given to this person is preceptor. The experience occurring in the last year of nursing education. Through review of nursing, education and pharmacy literature and interviews with practicing nurses, educators and administrators, a description of the role of preceptor emerged along with ideas that would facilitate the use of the preceptor role. Contracts for preceptors, workshop content to facilitate the assimilation of the role of preceptor, and a schematic drawing of role interaction between student, preceptor and nursing educator are other outcomes of this project. The preceptor educational model is an important teaching method that can help alleviate the disparity between practice and education in the nursing profession. To create a successful experience there is a need for qualified persons who understand and can activate the role of preceptor.
