Abstract (Chapter One) The Influence of Employer-Sponsored On-Site Child Care on Employment of Nurses who Work in Hospitals Denise L. Burggraff 1994 Research Problem Introduction to the Problem The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of employer-sponsored on-site child care on employment of nurses who work in hospitals. This study also includes a comparison of responses between nurses who commute from a rural area to work in an urban area and nurses who live and work in the same urban area. In this country the issue of child care is important among working parents and often influences a family’s choices about where to live and work. The availability and quality of child care also influences an employee’s job performance and as a result, businesses large and small are forced to address child care issues (Summerlin & Beck, 1993). The demographic trend toward two-career families continues, making child care a concern for both men and women (Medical Marketing & Media, 1993). The rising demand for employer-sponsored child care is not solely a women’s issue or a class issue.
