Overview of the Problem

Introduction

The primary goal of any educational program is to provide students with a quality education.  In nursing education, a major criterion used to measure quality student results on the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX).  (1,2,3,4)  Accreditation agencies used NCLEX results as an on-going evaluation tool (5);  prospective students and parents often use NCLEX results to choose between nursing programs. (6)

Many nursing programs attempt to predict whether a student will be successful on the NCLEX.  These predictions are often based on results of standardized examinations administered previous to admission and at various established points throughout a student’s program of study. (7,8,9)  False-positive and false-negative predictions would be extremely disadvantageous to both programs and students. (10, 11)

Programs and students invest high levels of resources into attaining positive outcomes. (12)
