Abstract

Knowledge and Attitudes Of Community Health Nurses

Toward Cholesterol Education and Referral

Roxann Obbink Boysen

1995

Community health nurses have an important role in the education and referral of adults who have elevated cholesterol levels.  Data were gathered in a rural state about community health nurses’ knowledge level of cholesterol education and referral, their attitudes of role responsibility toward cholesterol education and referral, and the extent of performance of cholesterol education and referral.  A questionnaire was mailed to a nonprobability sample of 115 registered nurses practicing in community health in a rural state.  Fifty-five nurses responded.  Results of the data indicated that nurses have a low level of knowledge, but they do possess attitudes of willingness to perform cholesterol classification education and referral.  At the present time, nurses perform the classification, educator, and referral roles of cholesterol at a minimal level.
