Abstract

A Comparison of Patient Satisfaction in Traditional Emergency Department Triage and Fast Track Triage Systems Of Care

Carol Borg

1996

Ninety-two persons who used the Emergency Department (ED) services of a 475 bed, Midwestern teaching hospital were surveyed to determine patient satisfaction before and after implementation of a fast track system of care.  Respondents were asked to return a mailed questionnaire which solicited responses using a likert like scale to express their level of satisfaction with access and location; admitting, nursing, medical, laboratory, and x-ray staff; the environment; and the ED in general.

Satisfaction levels increased for admitting staff, laboratory and x-ray personnel.  Satisfaction remained nearly unchanged with nursing and medical staff, and decreased for access and location.  The overall satisfaction in the ED was 84% during Traditional ED Care (TEDC).  Overall satisfaction increased to 100% with Fast Track Care (FTC).  The overall time respondents spent in the ED during TEDC and FTC varied by less than one minute.
