Abstract

Factors Affecting Attendance of Continuing Education

Programs by Registered Nurses in South Dakota

Zita J. Billings

1993

A study of Registered Nurses, licensed in South Dakota, was conducted to identify factors which affect their attendance at continuing education programs.  A 54.8% response rate, of useable questionnaires, was obtained.  Factors which were analyzed included belief in competence, monetary reimbursement, administrative encouragement, educational attainment, desire to advance professionally, mileage, number of Registered Nurses on staff at the employing institution, and work frequency.

Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant relationship (p value = 0.001) between the factor of monetary reimbursement and the dependent variable of number of continuing education programs attended per year.  No significant relationships were found between the other independent variables and the dependent variable.
