Abstract

Diabetic Complications In a Native American Population

Sue Besmer-Odenbach

1997

Nearly 10.3 million adults in the United States have been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus and nearly 5.4 million more have the disease but have not yet been diagnosed (U.S. Health and Human Services, 1997).  The annual amount spent on Diabetes Mellitus in South Dakota each year is estimated at $251 million (U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, 1995).  Diabetes Mellitus has multiple complex complications over the long term (Harris, 1996).  Complications arise and are more severe without tight glucose control (American Diabetes Association, 1995, p.4).

The purpose of this random retrospective chart review was to determine rates of diabetes on the Pine Ridge Reservation among the Native American population and compare it to the national rates.  The number of diabetic complications per individual were then examined for correlation with glycemic control.
