Abstract (Chapter One) The Comfort or Discomfort of Nursing Home Residents With Perceived Touch by Nurses in Photographs Carol Bergan 1986 Statement of the Problem Objectives of the Study Introduction In order for animals to survive they must be licked by their mothers. This basic premise follows through to the human species. For optimal development, the human infant must have affectionate tactile stimulation to develop as a healthy person. Tactile needs do not change with age; if anything, this need seems to increase. However, the Anglo-Saxon world teaches that touching is an acceptable behavior in childhood, but not for adolescents and adults. American culture tends to avoid thoughts of aging; it fails to understand the needs of the aging human beings for touch (Montague, 1978). Statement of the Problem The problem under investigation was: Do nursing home residents indicate comfort or discomfort with types of affective touch by nurses as depicted in photographs?
