Abstract The Effect of Early Removal of Urinary Catheters on Establishing Normal Voiding Patterns in Postoperative Urology Patients Yolanda P. Apedaile 1997 Currently there are no scientific guidelines regarding the optimal time of urinary catheter removal following urological surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of urinary catheter removal at midnight vs. at 6 am in postoperative urology patients. An experimental design was used. A total of 33 male participants between the ages 44 and 87 were randomly assigned to either group II where the catheters were removed at midnight. The time between catheter removal and discharge was significantly (p=0.002) shorter for the midnight group compared to the 6 am group. There was no other statistical significant values. All the patients in the midnight group were discharged the same day, versus 65% who were discharged in the 6 am group.
