University Sponsored Trip Approval

UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED TRIP APPROVAL

Application for Trip Permit forms are available from the departmental offices.  Trip regulations appear in the General Catalog.  It is essential that these guidelines be followed for insurance reasons and to legitimize student absence from classes.  At the time of approval, the student(s) will also receive a form to be signed by the faculty of the classes to be missed, in order to ensure an excused absence from the class(es) concerned.

A trip may not be approved after-the-fact and accurate reporting of student trips is essential.  Because of the importance of this process, if there is any possibility of a request not clearing the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs prior to the trip, it is suggested that you hand carry the forms to the office to make certain that it is signed before students leave campus.

The clinical course throughout the curriculum require the student to practice nursing in various locations, such as hospitals, clients’ homes, clinics, health department and other agencies.  Various modes of transportation are used for clinical experiences.  These include vehicles driven by agency personnel, state-owned vehicles or student-owned vehicles.

     Use of State-owned Vehicles

In accordance with SDCL 5-25-1.1, vehicles owned or leased by the state shall be used only in the conduct of state business.  State-owned vehicles are to be used only for class and clinical laboratory assignments.

     1.  State-owned vehicles are to be used and occupied exclusively by authorized persons for the purpose of University-approved trips.
     2.  Family, friends or any other non-authorized persons are not permitted to ride in state-owned vehicles at any time.
     3.  Students are expected to adhere to all traffic laws, including posted speed limits.
     4.  Safety belts shall be worn at all times in accordance with Executive Order 88-7.

Transportation to and from the major clinical experiences will be provided throughout the curriculum as follows:
     Brookings campus
     1.  State-owned vehicles are used to provide transportation to clinical experiences outside the Brookings area.
     2.  Senior nursing students enrolled in Nurs 495, Directed Study in Nursing, are required to provide their own transportation to complete their individual assignments.
     3.  RN students in the baccalaureate program are required to provide their own transportation to complete their clinical experience.
