Scholarships and Loans

Scholarships and Loans

     Nursing scholarships are awarded through the College of Nursing.  Scholarship applications for Scholarships awarded through SDSU are available at the University Financial Aids office or the Student Services office in Rapid City.  Students should complete and return scholarship and financial aid applications to the Financial Aid office by the university due date which is January 25. 

Scholarships available include:

     Department of Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships - Amounts and numbers of scholarships vary from year to year. 

  • Monroe Bebo Scholarship - Students planning a career in health sciences, with a minimum of two semesters left in the nursing major.  Preference given to students who have demonstrated interest in community health or health science (academic minor).
  • Anna Haugen Berdahl Award - Second semester sophomore with highest cumulative grade point average.  Given by Nursing Faculty.
  • Bertha Boekelheide Scholarship - Student in senior year at time of funding, preference given to student interested in public health nursing.
  • College of Nursing Alumni & Friends - Determined by need of student.  Preference given to nursing major student.
  • Orena Cooper Scholarship - Nursing student interested in community health.
  • Arthur Davis Scholarship - Student from Butte, Harding or lawrence county in the West River nursing major.  Preference given to student not receiving othere scholarships.  Personal statement required.
  • Mable Dunnom Scholarship - May be awarded to any nursing student in good standing.
  • R. Esther Erickson Scholarship - Sophomore or junior student in the nursing major.
  • Dr. Barbara Goddard - Student admitted to nursing major, preference to RN Upward Mobility student.  Evidence of high academic performance and extra-curricular activities.
  • Eugene & Joann Goodale Scholarship - Student entering junior year.  Active participant in university, community and church activities.  Positive attitude and willingness to seek creative methods to assist patients.  Not based solely on financial need and GPA.  Essay required.
  • Greater State Fund Nursing Scholarships - Awarded to any nursing student in good standing.
  • Dr. John C. Hagin Scholarship - Student in the nursing major.
  • Inez Hinsvark Acorn Scholarship - Students who require emergency funds for tuition, books, or living expenses.
  • Ruth Hobus Scholarship - Student seeking BS in nursing, who has demonstrated financial need.
  • Sr. Janice Iverson Scholarship - Student in the nursing major exhibiting scholastic ability, financial need.
  • Kindred-Kropenske Scholarship - Student in the sophomore or preferably junior year of the nursing major.  Demonstrated good clinical ability, satisfactory cumulative grade point average.  Financial need may be considered between candidates of equal credentials.  Recommended by clinical faculty.
  • Elsie Larson Scholarship - Recipient must have a 3.0 GPA, and evidence characteristic of caring, kindness and gentleness.
  • Nellie McLoughlin Scholarship - Alternates with colleges of AB & FCS.  Student who is a non-traditional student returning for further training.
  • Donald McRoberts Scholarship - Alternates with Chemistry and Medical Technology.  Student must be a junior or senior with average or better academic performance, promise to professional and financial need.
  • Cindy Miller Memorial Scholarship - Senior in Rapid City Baccalaureate program, “B” average, demonstrates financial need.
  • Florence L. (Hines) Peterka Memorial Scholarship - A well-rounded pre-nursing student from Hand or Hyde county area with an interest in the field of nursing.  The student recipient should have at least a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA, involvement in extra-curricular and social activities, and religious faith.  The student should show strong potential for admittance into the professional Nursing program and has high financial need. 
  • Carol J. Peterson Scholarship - RN Upward Mobility student residing in South Dakota.  Consideration given to student who could benefit from financial assistance because of personal circumstances (single parent, minimal or no agency support, additional expenses, i.e. travel.
  • Evelyn Peterson Scholarship in Nursing -The recipient shall be a student in good standing with high potential to finish the Master of Science program in Nursing.  The student selected should demonstrate financial need and have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Mildred Richeson Memorial Scholarship - RN Upward Mobility student, with GPA of 2.5, demonstrating financial need.
  • Marion Roach Scholarship in Nursing - The student shall be enrolled in the College of Nursing, the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA orhigher.  Financial need is also a consideration.  The scholarship may be renewable if the student continues to meet the above criteria.
  • Leslie & Wanda Roberts Family Freshman Scholarship - Alternates with Agricultural Engineering and Nursing.  Based on academic merit and high school rank.  Preference given to graduates of Northwestern High School in Melette, SD.
  • South Dakota Office of Rural Health Scholarship - Must be a nursing student with a cumulative GPA of at lest 3.5.  Must exhibit excellence in his/her academic and professional activities.  Commitment to rural health care, commit to practicing in rural South Dakota after graduation.  Priority will be given to students who areenrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner Practicum.
  • Fay & Mary Smith Scholarship - Junior or senior nursing major student with financial need.
  • Saint John's Rapid City Regional Scholarship - Preference to St. John’s graduates, West River, Sioux Falls, Pierre, and Watertown.  GPA 3.0, good standing in the College of Nursing.
  • Clarence M. Sturdevant Memorial Scholarship - Minimum of two semesters of undergraduate nursing remaining when funds are awarded.  One half the amount provided for each semester.
  • Mary and David Tidwell Endowed Scholarship in Nursing - The recipients must demonstrate financial need, be residents of South Dakota, and maintain an average to above average grade point status.
  • John & Alyce B. Travers Scholarship - Freshmen through upper classmen who are in the nursing major, preference to residents of Harding County.  Renewable.
  • Elaine Olness Trump-David Trump Scholarship -Recipient with good academic performance, potential in the profession, with financial need.
  • Allan Vig Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to a male student in the nursing major, displaying initiative in putting self through college without federal grants/scholarships.
  • Barbara Davis Wilkens Endowed Scholarship in Nursing - The recipients shall be residents of South Dakota with a preference toward students from the Huron, South Dakota area.  The recipient shall be a qualifying traditional or non-traditional student majoring in Nursing.  Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate leadership qualities through school or community activities.
  • Edward J. Williamson & Catherine B. Williamson Scholarship - Selection is based on academic performance, financial need and promise to the profession.  A recipient in the College of Nursing must be in the professional program.
University Scholarships - Nursing majors eligible.  Scholarships are allotted to each college on the basis of enrollment.  They are based on scholarship, leadership, character and need.

Briggs/May Scholarship
Each college is asked to recommend a student when a Briggs Scholar does not return to school or fails to maintain acceptable standard of scholarship or conduct.  The University Committee then fills the vacancy with a student of the same classification, but not necessarily from the same college. 

Community Scholarships and Grants
Community scholarships and grants are awarded by the individual organizations.  Separate applications for these scholarships and grants are available through Financial Aid and Nursing Student Services. 

A. Scholarships available to all students enrolled in SDSU nursing programs. 
     1. Dorothy & Walter Graham Scholarship
     2. Eidsness Funeral Home (resident of Brookings County)
     3. Madison Community Hospital (resident of Madison area)
     4. James J. Humphrey Scholarship (must be graduate of Brown County High School)
     5. American Association Mental Retardation Scholarship
     6. American Business Women's Association Scholarship
     7. Reifel Scholarship (member SD Sioux Tribe)
     8. Health Career Grant Fund
     9. National Student Nurse Scholarship
   10. V.A. Scholarship

B. Scholarships available to students enrolled on the Brookings campus only. 
     1. Brookings Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

C. Scholarships available to students enrolled on the Rapid City campus only. 
     1. Sturgis Community Health Care Center

     There are sources of scholarship and loan money available to students other than those specifically listed.  Examples of types of organizations which students are encouraged to explore independently are hospitals, fraternal organizations, community groups, and professional associations.   The Nursing Student Service Coordinators in Brookings and Rapid City may be helpful to students in identifying resources.  Students in Brookings are encouraged to check for information on scholarships and loans in NFA 361, file drawer.  In Rapid City, students may check with the secretary in the Nursing office for additional information. 

 NURSING ALUMNI LOAN FUND

     A. Eligibility of Student

      1.  Junior or senior level of nursing curriculum. 

     B. Regulations for a Loan

     1. Applications are available through the Nursing Student Services Office. 
     2. Applications are submitted to the Nursing Student Services Coordinator and are approved by the Undergraduate Admissions and Scholastic Standards Committee. 
     3. The Coordinator of Student Services notifies applicants of the award. 
     4. The Coordinator of Student Services alerts Financial Aid to complete a promissory note, which the student then signs. 
     5. An approved applicant may borrow a maximum of $500.00 for a period not to exceed 12 months. 
     6. Loans will become due and payable in full, including principal, interest and service charge upon the student's withdrawal or within one week prior to graduation from South Dakota State University if such date occurs before the due date shown on the promissory note. 
     7. There will be a service charge of $10.00 for each loan granted. 
     8. Interest on loans will be computed at an annual rate. 
     9. In case of bankruptcy, the government has ruled that the student loan may be written off. 

NURSE EDUCATION ASSISTANCE LOAN PROGRAM

     The South Dakota Board of Nursing has been authorized to administer a loan fund for nursing students. 

     A. ELIGIBILITY OF STUDENTS

     1. Is a citizen of the United States and a South Dakota Resident for a minimum of one year immediately proceeding the date of the Application. 

     2. Be accepted into a board approved nursing education program located in South Dakota for licensed practical nurses or registered nurses leading to initial licensure; or be accepted into a nursing education degree enhancement program for registered nurses which is acceptable to the board. 

     3. For applicants currently enrolled in a nursing program, have or maintain a satisfactory grade for progression in the nursing education program as determined by the faculty of the institution. 

     B. DEMONSTRATE FINANCIAL NEED AS DETERMINED BY

     1. Personal financial information submitted by the applicant. 

     2. Evaluation by the Financial Aid officer at the school in which the applicant is enrolled. 

     3. The amount of financial aid received from other sources in relation to the total direct educational expenses as submitted by the school. 

     C. REGULATIONS FOR A LOAN

     1. Submit all required application forms provided by the board by June 1 of the year in which the application is to be considered. 

     2. The number and amount of each loan will be determined annually by the South Dakota Board of Nursing but may not exceed $1,000 per full academic year. 

     3. Loan monies may be used only for direct educational expenses such as tuition, books and fees.  Room and board is not considered a direct educational expense. 

     4. A promissory note for the amount of the loan plus accrued interest will be required before loan monies can be disbursed.  If multiple awards are granted, they will be consolidated into one total amount for purposes of establishing terms of repayment.  Equal portions of the loan amount will be disbursed directly to the educational institution at the beginning of each academic term. 

     5. The student borrower may elect to repay the loan either by employment in nursing in South Dakota at a Conversion rate of $1 per hour or monetary payments within the required time period of five years.
