Needle Stick Policy

 
NEEDLE STICK POLICY

     Purpose of Policy:

     1.  Define significant body substance exposure to potentially infectious material
     2.  Define the responsibility of faculty members and students with regard to validation  of 
          information regarding Universal Precautions
     3.  Describe the procedure for follow-up investigation management, and prophylaxis of persons 
         with body substance exposures in the course of study in nursing in the College of Nursing

     Procedure:

     1.  All needle sticks, splashes of body fluids, and any exposure to suspected body fluids must be reported to the faculty member immediately for determination of possible blood-borne disease exposure.  (Note: An exposure incident is defined as all puncture wounds, blood or body substance on an open wound, unprotected mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or splashes in the mouth or eye.)

     2.  Upon exposure, the students will notify (1) the clinical instructor, (2) the Employee Health Nurse within the clinical facility (if exposure occurs outside the College of Nursing Laboratory), (3) South Dakota State University, Student Health Services Coordinator of Nursing Services, and (4) the Undergraduate Department Head.

     3.  South Dakota State University Student Health Services Coordinator of Nursing Services will coordinate immediate and all follow-up care.  Immediate and follow-up care may include sero-screening, HIV testing, Hepatitis B Vaccine administration and post-exposure immuno-prophylaxis (immune globulin).

     4.  Student exposure charges for this care and follow-up are at the expense of the student.

     NOTE: Students in the Nursing Major are encouraged to obtain Student Health Insurance through Student Health Services or other health insurance.
 

     Algorithm for Reporting
      Needle Stick Exposure or Exposure to Potentially Infectious Blood and/or Body Fluids
      Exposure to Blood or Body Fluid Or Needle Stick Exposure

     During Clinical:     During Lab:
      The Exposed Nursing student will:1. Identify the person by name, face, and location.2. Request the client to stay if the client is an outpatient of the agency.3. Request another nurse or student to stay with the client, if possible.4. Wash the exposed area as directed per instruction as soon as possible.5. Report the exposure to the clinical instructor stat.6. If the clinical instructor cannot be found, the student should inform the charge nurse stat and page the clinical instructor.7. After the instructor has contacted the SDSU Student Health Services, the student will report to the SDSU Student Health Services, SDSMT Student Health Services, or the nearest Emergency Room Department for examination and treatment.8. Assist the clinical instructor to complete the College of Nursing “Exposure Incident Report Form”.9. Report the incident to the SDSU Police Department to complete the Accident & Injury Report the same day.10. Remain in contact with College of Nursing Department Head and inform him/her about current home phone number and address as designated by the timeline. The Exposed Nursing Student will:1. Assist the clinical instructor to complete the College of Nursing “Exposure Incident Report Form”.8. Report the incident to the SDSU Police Department to complete the Accident & Injury Report the same day.9. Remain in contact with the College of Nursing Department Head and the SDSU Student Health Services, Coordinator of Nursing Service to inform them about current home phone number and address as designated by the time line.

     OTHER HEALTH FACTORS

     It is the student's responsibility to inform the appropriate faculty of any physical condition that could interfere with participation in activities of the nursing major.  Students should refer to the Technical Standards for Admission to, progression in, and completion of the Undergraduate Program in Nursing to clarify criteria related to functional ability.
