Mandatory Malpractice Insurance

MANDATORY MALPRACTICE INSURANCE

A charge to cover the group insurance premium is assessed per semester during the time the student is in clinical courses.  Nursing students pay the charge per semester.  The student is then enrolled in a "Blanket Liability Insurance Program" with broad "Occurrence Based" coverage.  The insurance company is McGinnis and Associates, a division of Seabury and Smith, A Marsh and McLennan Company.  The limits of liability are $1,000,000/3,000,000 on an occurrence/aggregate basis.

LPN's who are enrolled in the nursing major courses must seek individual malpractice insurance.  The may do this through McGinnis and Associates (www.seabury.com or call 1-800-621-3008), Nurses Service Organization (www.nso.com or call 1-800-247-1500), or another insurance company approved by the College of Nursing, SDSU.  The limits of liability must be $1,000,000/3,000,000 on an occurrence/aggregate basis.

Students must have proof of coverage before they can begin clinical components of their courses.

MANDATORY MEDICAL INSURANCE

Beginning Fall 2000, all nursing students will be required to show proof of medical insurance or purchase the SDSU MEGA Life and Medical Insurance Policy. Proof of medical insurance must be documented at the beginning of each semester by presenting your medical insurance card to Nursing Student Service. Experience has shown that too many studnets are without adequate health insurance coverange during their college years. As a health profession student, you have added risks of exposure to various potential illnesses by the nature of the work. It is important to take the precautionary measure of providing insurance coverage for yourself.

If you are on a major medical plan through your parents or spouse, you will need to sign a waiver indicating that you are already covered. If you are not currently covered through your parents or spouse, you will receive a packet of information and enrollment forms from MEGA Life. For those students who need immunizations prior to beginning of clinicals, these immunizations will be covered by MEGA Life if you get these immunizations through Student Health in Brookings. If you use financial aid, the cost of the premium ($568) can be included in the financial aid package.

Students who do onot comply with submission of all forms including CPR card, immunization records, and proof of Medical Insurance will be administratively withdrawn from the course.
