Module 1:
Concept Mapping Theory

Module Objective:
By the end of this module, the learner will be able to describe three benefits to concept mapping in the nursing setting.

What is concept mapping?

According to Schuster (2002), concept mapping is "an innovative approach to planning and organizing nursing care". For many years nurses have depended on the nursing care plan to organize nursing interventions pertaining to clients. This module will introduce you to a new way of looking at a client condition.

A concept map is a diagram of a client's condition, assessment, and treatments. It can help the nurse develop interventions for treating the client as well as monitor the progress the client makes as a result of the interventions performed. Concept mapping allows the nurse to work on critical thinking skills by determining the priority needs of the client and the relationship of the data documented on the concept map.

As noted in the article and the PowerPoint presentation, there are numerous reasons for using concept mapping in the clinical nursing setting. Some of the most revelent benefits of concept mapping include:

1. Concept mapping improves a nurse's ability to organize his/her bank of knowledge for application in the nursing profession.

2. Concept mapping allows the nurse to assimilate previously learned knowledge with newly acquired knowledge.

3. Concept mapping increases a nurse's critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.

4. A concept map is a visual aid it may increase a nurse's retention of knowledge.

5. Concept mapping links nursing theory with nursing practice.

6. Concept mapping allows the nurse to identify what he/she knows about the client and also to identify what he/she must learn to care for this client.
