ADVISING FOREIGN/INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS All non-immigrant foreign (F-1 or J-1) students must be referred to the International Student Affairs Office on the Brookings campus before they apply to enter the College. The Nursing student Services Advisor, whether on-campus or an off-campus site, must phone the International Student Affairs Office and inform them of the student's desire to apply. The primary function of the International Student Affairs Office is to assist international students in attaining their educational goals. The office also administers policies and provides a wide range of support services related to the non-immigrant status of international students, such as the processing of admission applications, interpretation of immigrant regulations, advising, outreach, handling official documents and record maintenance. The office is also responsible for conducting an international student orientation program prior to the start of each semester. The Board of Regents requires that all non-immigrant foreign students must carry proof of Board of Regents approved health insurance. The Office of Health Services oversees the purchase of health insurance and administers the program. Advisors should explain the policy of "English as a Second Language Requirements" as printed in the Nursing Student Handbook. The requirements vary from college to college at South Dakota State University. Any student whose primary language is not English must complete the "Test of English as Second Language" (TOEFL) before admission to South Dakota State University. Those students who have permanent residency are not required to take the TOEFL before entering the United States. Any student whose primary language is not English must meet the English Literacy Requirements as set forth by the College of Nursing. Please refer to the policy or contact the Department of Nursing Student Services at the College of Nursing, Brookings Campus (688-4106). Off-campus advisors should refer to the "Off-Campus
