Absences from Class

ABSENCES FROM CLASS

Absences – Health Reasons (reference Office of Student Affairs)

1. Absences from class are a matter for the student and the instructor to handle.  Therefore, it is the student’s responsibility to contact professors in case of illness or disability.
2. The Student Health Service or health care provider will verify the existence of health problems and disabilities on written release of students (a) during final exam periods and (b) when the student is physically unable to participate in a wellness class.
3. In case of incapacitating illness, prolonged hospitalization, serious injury or other extenuating circumstances where it is impossible for the student to contact his or her instructors, the Dean of Student Affairs (or designee) will contact the student’s advisor and the student’s instructors.  It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Dean of Student Affairs at 688-493

General Attendance Policy (reference 2000-2002  South Dakota State University Bulletin p.22)

1. Class attendance requirements will be established by each instructor and specified in writing at the beginning of the term on a course syllabus.
2. Regular class attendance is the responsibility of all students.

Military Service (reference South Dakota Board of Regents Policy 5:7)

Military Service – Withdrawal Without Penalty

Students required to withdraw from state supported institutions before completing a semester may receive credit or refund privileges if they are regularly enrolled and belong to a military unit called for duty or are drafted and not eligible for deferment, and, the discontinuance of class attendance is on the last practicable day before reporting for duty as determined by the college or university in which they are enrolled.  Eligible students who are required to report for military duty not earlier than four calendar weeks prior to the date a semester ends as stated in the official catalog of the institution, or after completion of at least seventy-five percent of the enrollment period in a non-standard semester course, may, when authorized by the instructor, be given full credit for all courses for which they have an average of “C” or better.  Eligible students who received credit or an incomplete or credit for a course in which they are enrolled shall be entitled to a full refund of tuition and academic fees.

College of Nursing addendum: The Undergraduate Nursing Department accepts a minimum of a “C” grade.

NOTE: Absence from the non-nursing courses comes under the prerogative of other departments.  It is the responsibility of the student to ascertain and follow those guidelines.

College of Nursing Excused Absences

Within each academic year there are activities that are regarded as College of Nursing approved events for excused absences from nursing or health science classes, laboratory or practicum.  Such events include the South Dakota Nurses’ Association Convention; the Student Nurses’ Organization Convention; the Student Nurses’ Organization meetings, workshops or board meetings; wellness or health forums on campus sponsored by the University; South Dakota Environmental Health Association; South Dakota Public Health Association.  Department Heads will review events not included in this list on an individual basis.

The guidelines to be used to arrange an absence that applies to the above events are as follows:

1. Students may request an excused absence from class to attend these events.  Because these are official College approved events, it is expected that faculty will encourage students attendance.
2. Students must be attending these events either in conjunction with their participation in the organization or as a class assignment.
3. Students must arrange in advance with the faculty for the excused absence and determine what accountability is necessary due to the absence.
4. Students participating in official University extra-curricular activities, (e.g., basketball, track, band, drama), should be excused to the extent feasible, but with the expectation that time will be made up.  Arrangements must be made well in advance of the University extra-curricular event that necessitates the absence(s).  If participation in an extra-curricular activity is so time-consuming that it disrupts continuity of instruction so that safety in clinical performance is threatened, the faculty and advisor should dialogue with the student about taking a reduced credit load.
5. This is a concept of general approval and not blanket approval.  Students are expected to make individual arrangements with faculty members well in advance of the activity.
6. University policies pertaining to absences, trip permits, and travel will be followed.
7. Absences for verified medical reasons, death of family member or significant other, or other verified extenuating   circumstances judged acceptable by the instructor or the institution will also be honored.  Students will be given equivalent opportunities for obtaining grades as students who were in attendance.
