TINIKLING ACTIVITIES

TINIKLING

This dance is a favorite in the Visayan Islands, Philippines especially in the province of Leyte.

The [Tinkling] is a bird with long legs and a long neck.  The “[Tinikling] dance, there fore, imitates the movements of the [Tinkling] birds as they walk between grass stems or run over tree branches.  This spectacular dance is usually accompanied by a song.

The performers dance along the sides and between two bamboo poles, about nine feet long, which are placed horizontally on the ground.  The poles are struck together in time to the music.  Skill is demonstrated in dancing between the bamboos, and in keeping the feet from being caught when the poles catch the feet of the dancers.

Two bamboo players sit opposite each other on the ground holding the ends of the bamboo poles (sometimes long pestles).  Two pieces of board or bamboo, about thirty inches long and two inches thick, are place under the poles, about one foot from the ends.

TINIKLING

The original dance Tinikling is a lengthy, rather complicated dance.  By taking only some of the figures and steps from the dance, it becomes appropriate for almost any age group……..

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DANCE:  Two long bamboo (PVC) poles about 9 feet long.  The poles rest on the blocks of wood about 2 inches thick and 30 inches long.  Two players sit on the floor, holding a pole in each hand, and strike the poles together and apart in this rhythm:

Count 1:            Strike poles together in middle

Count 2&3:       Strike poles apart on block of wood twice.  Maintain a steady rhythm

                                    In-out-out, in-out-out.

STEP 1 – BASIC

w        Dancers stand outside of poles so that right hip is near pole #1.  In starting the dance, the first count is usually just a pause.

o        Count 1:            Pause, poles are struck in middle.

o        Count 2,3:         Leap side wards into middle onto right, then left foot.

(Poles apart)

o        Count 1:            Leap side wards onto right foot, outside pole #2.

(Poles together)

o        Count 2,3:         Leap side wards into middle onto left, then right foot.

(Poles apart).  Continue in this manner.

The step may also be done with dancers standing outside pole #2, facing the other way.

On the 8th measure, dancers turn in the middle with a step hop, face the other way and repeat the figure.  On the 8th measure of the second eight measures, turn by hopping twice on left foot.  (Adv. Pattern: turn on each step)

STEP 2 STRADDLE OR JUMP

w        Dancers move continuously clockwise round and in poles in this manner:

o        Count 1,2,3,4:  Walk forward outside pole #2 with a R, L, R, L

o        Count 5,6:         Leap between poles – right, left – and finish outside pole #1.

Continue 4X.  Reverse.

STEP 3 CLOCKWISE OR COUNTER-CLOCKWISE

w        The two dancers join hands as they face each other.

o        Count 1:            Jump astride both poles as they are struck together in center.

o        Count 2&3:       Jump in middle, landing on both feet twice at the same time as

as the poles are struck apart twice.

w        Continue for 16 measures of music.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY:

w      Divide students up into groups of three or four

w      Go around and describe and demonstrate each of the three stations that the groups will be stationed at.

w      Each group will tour each station for two to three minutes.

w      STATION 1—BEAT & ACCENT

o        Students move to the beat of the rhythm sticks in 4/4 time.  The students will start in the center square and listen for the beat of the rhythm sticks.  For every beat they will jump to an outside square and for the following beat jump back to the center square.  Repeat this process remembering to hit the center square every other beat.  The students will listen for the accented beat.  Every time they hear the accented beat they will make two quick jumps for that beat.

w      STATION 2—RHYTHM PATTERN

o        Two students will manipulate the sticks in 4/4 time.  The other students will move to the rhythm pattern created by the manipulators.  The pattern will be in, in, out, out.  The non-manipulating students will start outside of the sticks and jump in on the first two beats and out on the second two beats.  The manipulators will beat the sticks on the floor close together for the first two beats and beat the sticks on the floor far apart for the second two beats.  They will do this until they have a good rhythm pattern flow.

w      STATION 3--TEMPO

o        Students will form a single line behind the tinikling sticks track.  Instructor will give a movement and a tempo speed for the students to perform through the track.  The instructor will use rhythm sticks to guide the student’s tempo.

w      Show the concept of tinikling.  The poles are struck or tapped together on beats 1 and 2 while staying close to the floor.  On beats 3 and 4 are tapped on the floor while staying about 18 inches apart.  These motions are continuously repeated.

w      Begin the dance with the poles together and the dancer on the left side.  On count 1 hop on the left foot, on count 2 hop on the left foot again.  On count 3 (poles apart) step inside with the right foot first, followed by a step inside with the left foot on count 4.  When count 1 arrives again (poles together) the dancer should be on the right side of the poles and on count 1 and 2 there should be a hop on the right foot.  On count 3 (poles apart) step inside with the left and follow with the right foot on count 4.  On count 1 the dancer should be back to the left side, where the dance began.  Repeat.

w      When the class gets the hang of this allow them to create their own dance using a full 8 counts (1-4, 1-4).  Break them into groups based on the number of students.  Each group must have at least 3 people.
