Individual Exercise #3 - Tournament Design - Due Tuesday, Dec. 11 -  40 points

Part 1: (15 points) Guide to participation

You and your group will put together a "Guide to Participation" designed to inform program participants of all facets of your program. Your "Guide" should take into account such things as eligibility, costs, benefits, policies and procedures, rules and/or rule modifications (if applicable), accommodation policies, safety/risk management, program control, participant evaluation process, and/or other areas that might be applicable to running an effective program (See text for definitions). You may base your "Guide" format on an existing program that is similar to yours, however the information contained in your Guide must be your own. Copying the information from an existing program will not meet the requirements of this project.

Part 2: (15 points) Tournament

This exercise is designed to allow you to practice designing a round robin tournament with a single elimination playoff at the conclusion of the tournament (within the four week time frame). You must use a computer program to design your tournament. One is available free for download at http://www.tournamentbuilder.com To complete the project you should do the following:

1. Design the best round robin tournament possible given the parameters listed below. Things to consider in your round robin design include:

· Figuring out the number of leagues and number of teams per league in your tournament
· Placing teams in appropriate leagues
· Figuring out game times, dates and game locations for each game of the tournament
· Creating a balanced schedule taking into account the variables listed in the description below
· Producing a schedule for each league (showing game times, dates and game locations for each team in the tournament) - you should come up with names for each of the teams in your tournament to make the schedule "real"
· Producing a master tournament schedule, showing when each league will play (by day, time and location)

2. Design the best single elimination playoff tournament possible given the parameters listed below. Things to consider in your single elimination design include:

· Figuring out the maximum number of teams you can enter in your single elimination tournament given the variables listed below
· Determining criterion for advancement into the post-season single elimination tournament
· Creating a tournament bracket, including seeding teams and placing byes
· Figuring out game times, dates, and game locations for each game of the single elimination playoff
· Producing a master tournament schedule, showing when each game of the tournament will be played (by day, time and location)

YOUR INFORMATION!

You are in charge of programming an adult softball tournament to be played as part of the Brookings Parks and Recreation Adult Sports program. You have reserved a facility and have registered teams for your tournament. The following represents the information you must work with:

Facility Reservation: The tournaments should fit in this time frame

Sun, 4/16 thru Thurs, 4/20 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (4 hours)
Sun, 4/23 thru Thurs, 4/27 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (4 hours)
Sun, 4/30 thru Thurs, 5/3 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (4 hours) for single elimination!

3 fully lighted softball fields are available for your use

Teams
You have 8 men’s teams registered for a competitive softball league – 4 represent bars/restaurants in the community and 4 represent different churches

You have 7 men’s teams registered for a “fun” softball league – 3 represent bars/restaurants in the community and 4 represent different churches

You have 8 women’s teams registered - 4 represent bars/restaurants in the community and 4 represent different churches

You have 7 women’s teams registered for a “fun” softball league – 3 represent bars/restaurants in the community and 4 represent different churches

Tournament Specifics
You can form round-robin leagues any way you choose - do what you think will give your participants the BEST tournament they can have. You can have certain leagues play certain nights and/or on certain fields

You can choose the length of games - remember, this will have an effect on your league sizes and the numbers of teams you can have in your single elimination tournament

Your goal should be maximum usage of facilities. What can you do so fields are not left empty.

There should be ONE single elimination playoff for all of the men’s teams  and ONE single elimination playoff for all of the women’s teams. All single elimination playoffs are to happen the fourth week

Part 3: PROJECT REQUIREMENT – PRESENTATION  12/ 11 & 13

Presentation (10 points)

You should plan on your presentation taking approximately 7 to 10 minutes. Remember, you are presenting your program to your participants, so you need to make sure that everyone is clear on what is expected of them in your program. You should consider effective presentation techniques, such as the use of overheads or other presentation technology.

**EACH PERSON SHOULD RETAIN A COPY OF THIS PROJECT FOR THE PORTFOLIO THEY WILL ASSEMBLE THEIR SENIOR YEAR**
