Course Description
This is the third semester of a three semester Honors Calculus sequence.  In this course we will study  curves and vectors in the plane and three-space, linear algebra, differentiation and integration of functions of two or more variables (multivariable calculus), and vector calculus.  In addition to daily homework, in-class examinations (tests), and a comprehensive final project, this Honors section will feature Proficiency Examinations over 'skill' material, group Projects, an introduction to Maple, and reaction papers to selected readings.

Textbooks

CALCULUS: Early Transcendentals by Varberg, Purcell and Rigdon,

We will cover selected material from Chapters 11 – 15  as time permits.  A Student Solution Manual is available. My copy is on 2 hour/Overnight reserve at Briggs Library.

PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMTICS: A Contemporary Introduction to the World of Proofs and Pictures, Second Edition by James Robert Brown.

We will read selected chapters, discuss them in class, and submit written reaction papers to the readings.

Grading
Your grade will depend upon homework, in-class work, projects, tests, proficiency exams, reaction papers?, and of course, a comprehensive final examination as detailed below: (Note the importance of Homework!!)

Your course grade will depend upon the percentage of 1400 points you earn during the semester.

                               100-90% - A;  89-80% - B;  79-70% - C;  69-60% - D.

Points may be earned as follows:

Proficiency Exams      300 points (three at 100 points @)              21.43%

                                    Tests                         200 points (two at 100 point @)                   14.29%

Homework                   400 points (total scaled to 400)                   28.57%

                                    Reaction Papers ?        100 points (5 at 20 points @)                        7.14%

Projects                      200 points (at least 2; total scaled to 200)   14.29%

                                    Final Examination        200 points                                                    14.28%

Math 225 Assignments

Electronic Reserves  This is the Briggs Library site where class information can be stored to be accessed by students.  For this class the keys to homework assignments will be posted after the assignment has been turned in.

Downloads  This page has some Maple programs to download.

Peanut Software  This site contains a very nice graphing program, WINPLOT, that you
should download (for free) and learn to use.  In particular, it will graph curves defined by
equations, parametric curves in three space, and three dimensional surfaces.  We will be using it in a Computer Lab and for some demonstrations in class.
