John Folkerts (BS, )
As CIO/COO at First Bank and Trust my main responsibilities are to assist in strategic direction of the company and oversee the management teams in our Operations and IT area's. I am involved in researching and managing business relationships with various external companies. I (and mostly my staff) use mathematical skills on a daily basis to assist with troubleshooting specific issues, developing logic strategies to address a business need/product needs, and utilizing our statistical and analytics skills to assist with the development of new products or to recommend improvements to existing products based on the data we capture.
How did I get to where I am now???? I would say that my ability to a) troubleshoot, b) analyze data and information, c) develop logical strategies d) communication and people management skills would be the primary skill set area's that have allowed me to advance. All of which I enhanced with my Mathematics education, even the communication and people management aspects (since I was on the "teacher" career path). Many of our successful Managers are Mathematics graduates, probably because the ability to logically solve complex business problems and come up with creative solutions is what many managers have to do on a daily basis.
