English as a Second Language


South Dakota State University offers the following set of courses as an emphasis.  These courses are intended to meet the requirements for the State of South Dakota endorsement in English as a New Language.  Please contact R. L. Erion (ralph_erion@sdstate.edu) for more specific information. 
 

Ling/EDFN 460/560 Applied Linguistics for Teaching English as a Second Language 3 cr
EDFN 462/562 Teaching Language Arts for English as a Second Language Across the Curriculum 3 cr
Eng/EDFN 463/563 Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language 3 cr
EDFN 461/561 Cultural and Psychological Perspectives in the Acquisition of English as a Second Language 3 cr
Electives 

The endorsement for the South Dakota Teaching Certificate requires 18 credits.  The remaining 6 credits can be selected from the following:  Any Foreign Language course,  Ling 425 Structure of English, Ling 420/520 The New English,  Ling 443/543  Development of the English Language,  Ling 552 General Semantics, EDFN 789 Internship:  ESL, FL 420 Foreign Language Teaching Methods.
