Assignments

General information regarding class assignments have been provided in your syllabus.  For a detailed discussion, refer to announcements made in class and to the information below. I will update this page frequently so that you have up-to-date information on what's been covered and what to expect in the upcoming class.

Note that all assignments are to be completed before class.  Quizzes will be based upon the required reading.

Tues 8/31/04 Discussion will focus on a general introduction to the class.  The syllabus will be distributed and reviewed.  Course expectations will be defined.  The role of BusinessWeek in this class will be discussed.
Thurs. 9/02/04 We will meet in the Hansen Hall Computer Lab (#023). During this class we're get introduced to the Business Strategy Game.  Complete before lab:  Go on-line at www.bsg-online.com and read the information section of the business simulation game.  Bring your access code to lab with you.
Tues. 9/7/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 1 of the Pearce/Robinson text.  Have that read, as well as the section on SWOT analysis on pp. 166-169.  We'll conduct an exercise using SWOT.
Thurs. 9/7/04 We'll be using computer lab time to work on Practice One decisions.  Spend some "computer time" before you come to lab, so that you are familiar with how the program works.
Tues. 9/14/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 2. We'll discuss working with mission statements.
Thurs. 9/16/04 We'll be using computer lab time to review practice one decisions.  Have your reports printed out so that you can make notes in the margins.  Start working on Practice year 2 decisions.
Tues. 9/21/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 3. We'll discuss dealing with the external environment.  Most of you should be receiving your BusinessWeek magazine by now.  Each week, spend some time reading the major articles.  Be sure to keep all of your magazines, for we'll be using them for discussion later this semester.
Thurs. 9/23/04 We'll be starting over "for real" with the simulation, and will work on making Year 11 decisions.
Tues. 9/28/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 4.  We'll be discussing global issues as it relates to business. We'll also look at Coca-Cola's international marketing strategies,  and explore Korean and American consciousness structure differences.
Thurs. 9/30/04 We'll be making Year 12 decisions.
Tues. 10/5/04 Exam 1.  Please refer to the study guide that was distributed in class on Tues. 9/28/04
Thurs. 10/7/04 We'll be making Year 13 decisions.  Don't forget that your Year 13 decisions and Quiz 2 are due by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11
Tues. 10/12/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 5. We'll be covering internal analysis (also called company profiles), including studying SW Airlines functional strategy strengths.
Thurs. 10/14/04 We'll be making Year 14 decisions.  Be sure that you are working on your strategic plan and are aware that the deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, October 18.  As you know, I'll be out of state at a research conference, but a lab monitor will be in HH computer lab for you during class time.
Tues. 10/19/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 6. We'll be discussing the role of grand strategies in strategy formulation.
Thurs. 10/21/04 We'll be making Year 15 decisions.  Are you keeping up on your reading of the BusinessWeek magazines?
Tues. 10/26/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 7. We'll be discussing strategic analysis and choice.
Thurs. 10/28/04 We'll be making Year 16 decisions, discussing the upcoming stockholder's report and determining the report presentation order.
Tues. 11/2/04 There will be a short quiz on chapter 8. We'll be discussing portfolio matrix analysis. You'll receive a review guide for the upcoming exam. Look on the grading portion of the course webpage to see the final tally of your quiz scores.
Thurs. 11/4/04 The entire lab will be devoted to working on the upcoming stockholder's reports.
Tues. 11/9/04 Exam 2.  Please refer to the study guide that was distributed in class on Tues. 11/2/04
Thurs. 11/11/04 Veteran's Day Holiday - No class.
Tues. 11/16/04 Strategy in Action (Dr. Mark Berdahl). Attendance required.

Thurs. 11/25/04 Thanksgiving Day - No class
Tues. 11/30/04 Final Stockholder Report Presentation.  Strategy in Action - BusinessWeek discussion of Innovation
Thurs. 12/2/04 We'll be working on Year 19, and will receive feedback on the stockholder's reports and your BusinessWeek report.
Tues. 12/7/04 Strategy in Action - BusinessWeek discussion of Eddie Lampert and the K-Mart/Sears merger.
Thurs. 12/9/04 Receive feedback on your 2nd BusinessWeek report. Discuss BSG and Peer Evaluation.  Receive and start work on final management audit (summary).
Thurs. 12/16/04 2:00 p.m. deadline for final management audit.  Check decision cycle for Peer Evaluation deadline. I encourage you to submit your materials as soon as you have completed them instead of waiting until right before the deadline.  Grades will be posted on WebAdvisor.
