Course Description: This course is designed to be an introduction to the field of clinical laboratory science. It is intended to be a 2 semester course with the topic of hematology and coagulation being covered the first semester. The course format is both lecture and laboratory based.

Attendance Policy: Experience has shown that you will gain from the class in direct proportion to what you put into it. You will find the clinical internship year of your major is the most demanding year of your college career. All of the information presented in the course is background material to aid you during your internship. Therefore, it is critical that an effort be made to attend all of the classes. I realize that some circumstances occur that necessitate missing class. It is your responsibility to obtain the lecture notes or other materials if you miss a class. Attendance is mandatory for labs.

Assignments: You will be given periodic assignments, such as self-directed learning activities, case studies, etc. All assignments are given a due date. It is your responsibility to make sure that assignments are turned in on time. Late assignments will receive reduced grades of up to 10% per day that they are late.

Academic Honesty: Every student is expected to do his/her own work unless directed otherwise. Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero (0) mark on that assignment or test. The tenets of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Guidelines for Ethical Behavior state:

Recognizing that my integrity and that of my profession must be pledged to the best possible care of patients based on the reliability of my work, I will:

bullet

Treat patients and colleagues with respect, care and thoughtfulness.

bullet

Perform my duties in an accurate, precise, timely and reasonable manner.

bullet

Safeguard patient information as confidential, within the limits of the law.

bullet

Prudently use laboratory resource.

bullet

bullet

Work within the boundaries of laws and regulations and strive to disclose illegal or improper behavior to the appropriate authorities.

bullet

Continue to study, apply, and advance medical laboratory knowledge and skills and share such with my colleagues, other members of the healthcare community and the public.

Disability Accommodations: If you are a person with a disability and anticipate needing any type of accommodation in order to participate in this class, please inform me and make the appropriate arrangements with the Office of Disability Services. The Office of Disability Services is locate in 110 West Hall. To schedule an appointment, call (605) 688-4504 and request to speak with Nancy L. Schade, Coordinator of Disability Services.

The syllabus for Chem 382 L can be accessed by clicking here. Chem 382L will be given a separate grade. Each laboratory exercise will be worth 15 points. In addition, there will be 2 laboratory quizzes worth 60 points each. The same grading scale will be used as for the lecture portion of the course

Here are some Powerpoint presentations for the specimen collection lab.

If you disagree with the way a paper or exam has been graded, or if there are mistakes in grading your exam, you will have one class period in which to bring it to my attention.
